Suite Room (1)
I learned the grammar of past perfect and past perfect continuous in last class. Though I had learned it in school, I couldn't understand how to use them in conversation. I'll review them now. I have an anecdote which is suit for writing an essay using "past perfect or past perfect continuous." Let's try to write.
About seven years ago, I quitted my job. I had been working at an architect office in Nagano prefecture. And a co-worker quitted a month later. We had lived in the same apartment house. We were surprised when we knew the announcement that we were going to quit in a morning assembly, because we had not talked about it.
We decided to travel to Europe together.
We had enjoyable 2 weeks in Europe and we separated at the airport in Viena. My friend was going to London to study English. She was staying a home for 10 days. And I was going to Italy to see beautiful buildings. I visited Venezia and a few local cities. Then I went to Milano. Milano was the end of the 3 weeks journey in Europe.
The hotel in Milano was a small classical but nice. But Milano was not as clean city as I had expected. There were many cigarette butts on the streets. Because of the air with exhaust gas, I had a sore throat. 3 weeks journey was so long and I had traveled last week alone Actually, I was really tired. The accident began when I was going to leave Milano.
Though I had reserved a bus to the airport in Milano, it didn't come in the morning. The clerk at the front desk of the hotel told me that the bus driver hadn't come to the bus company's office yet. It seemed that he wanted to insist it was a daily happening. I thought that here was Italy. I didn't have time to complement. I asked him to call a taxi.
My plane was fog-bound at Milano airport. We had to wait to be cleared for takeoff.
And to make matters worse, it had been raining heavily in London. We couldn't arrive at Heathrow airport on time. I had to change at Heathrow for Narita and I knew that I didn't have enough time. I hurried up.
As you know, when we came from Europe, we need to get on a subway to go to Japan. But that time, I forgot where the subway st. was. I asked a man who seemed a flight attendant. He wore an uniform of British Airways and was talking to a femal attendant in the lobby. I was going to get on a British Airways’ airplane to Narita, so I thought that asking him was best way for me. But he told me that I was taking a break now.
OK. I won't interfere. You enjoy talking to her. You like her, don't you? I thought that here was not Japan and I should not have a wrong idea every fright attendants were kind like one of Japanese airplane company. I didn't have to complement.
Finally I could get on a subway. I asked a woman the time in the subway. She glanced at my boots and told me the time bluntly. Why does people in Europe look at shoes or bags ? I sometimes felt that they were talking about my or my friend's shoes or bags in the bus, train and shop. Even though my listening ability was low but I realized that they seemed to evaluate us. Probably they were judging our class or rank from the costs of shoes or bags. I felt Europe was a class-conscious society. If you want to go smoothly, you should wear shoes and bag which look high quality. Easy to understand is important. A sign that you can buy a high-quality product will protect you. I learned it from the chain of events which I'm writing now. I don't like a class-conscious society.
I wore brown buckskin boots made in Germany. The maker of the boots is eco. It's is popular in Japan now and not special. We can buy shoes or boots of eco in shoes shop in Japan. But probably, my boots were easy to understand for her. Maybe.
To be continued.
